Hey Laura, I had no problems traveling by myself there, locals are super friendly and welcoming, you will be asked to take many selfies with them.
I always wore pants and t-shirts (shoulder covered and no cleavage) even at the beach, even when swimming. My advice is to use common sense, if you see many foreigners in swimsuits (like you might find in Bira beach in Sulawesi or in the Togian) then it's ok to use a bikini or a one-piece, but if you're at a local beach and everyone is fully clothed, then keep your clothes on, otherwise be prepared to be seriously stared at (not necessarily in a bad way but they've probably never seen it before as it's not that touristy).
Otherwise, make sure to factor in distances between places, you'll easily lose a day (or sometimes even 2) in transport + consider doing some Couchsurfing, I did and had great experiences + download Google translate and Indonesian as most people don't really speak English + if you buy a sim card, you'll have to buy a new data package everytime you change island.

Hi Julie thanks for the great article really helpful and informative! I am a female solo traveler and just wondering what it’s like at all the beaches in Sulawesi and Kalimantan, do I have to be fully covered up? I am planning on doing a lot of diving so will be spending a fair bit of time at the beaches. Any if you have any other advice about anything would be greatly appreciated! Good to see a travel blog on sulawesi/Kalimantan there’s not that much info out there. Cheers
