In reply to rekotomo. If you're already in Sabang, you don't need to go through a tour, just show up at the pier and they'll group you with other people. For the permit, I got mine in Puerto Princesa, but I think you can get it in Sabang as well. When you book your hotel in Sabang, send them a message to ask about it.

Hello…
Thank you very much for your blog. Very informative and can help me to figure out if I want to go to the Underground River.

I’m thinking to go to the Philippine on the 25th of December 2023, and my plan is like this :
From Manila, once arrive in Puerto Princesa airport, go directly to a budget accomodation near Sabang beach and spend the night there. Ask the hostel I stay to arrange a tour (which already included the permit document) to Underground River for next morning as early as possible (to avoid too much crowd).

Maybe you know if it is possible or not to do like that ?
Because from googling the internet, if using a tour operator, the trip is always start from Puerto Princesa city then approx 2 hours drive from Puerto Princesa to Sabang wharf.

In reply to Ma. Angelica Goldamier Cabaddu Cannu. Hey, they do have bigger boats good for up to 20 people, I don't know the price though. Yes you can start at 1PM, you'll just have less time to enjoy the islands, but it's dooable. Hope this helps :)

In reply to sjors. Hey, 2 weeks are perfect, you can split your time between Derawan and one of the national parks. Both parks are great to visit and you'll get to hike, boat, and experience wildlife and local culture in both. I would pick the one that's easier to reach from where you'll end up after Derawan - flying is your best option. Once you get to either one, you can tell the guide what you want to do and see and they'll arange it. Hope this helps :)

Hello Julie, very nice suggestions!! We are hyped by your stories. We are with 5 friends, who love the adventure of Kalimantan we think. We want to go to Derawan, and visit if possible local tribes and do a river boat sleepover (on a boat or in the jungle) adventure somewhere. We love jungle trekking but don’t really like “fake” places where they feed the animals. We rather don’t see them in wild places , then spot them on a semi wild place. After reading your post, the Danau sentarum park sounds cool to visit jungle plus longhouses of Dayak people, or Sebangau national park. Which one would you suggest to go if we have to choose? we love hiking, but also would be fine with a boat tour on the river to float into the jungle for a few days. And more important, do you think we could make a trip combining Derawan and a place where we can take a boat and go into the jungle in one of the places in 2 weeks? Hope to hear from you!

Hey Eli, I mostly got around via public transportation, renting a motorbike here and there for the day to explore the area - but you can definitely rent one for your whole trip, the main road that crosses the island is good and if you're used to driving on not-so-great roads you should be fine. The only thing is that you'd have to drive back on the same road to Labuan Bajo, I don't think you can do a loop. Hope this help, let me know if you have any other questions and have a nice trip :)

Hi Julie, thanks for all the amazing content! Really helps planning the upcoming trip. Last time I visited Flores I went there only for diving and spent most of my time on a Liveaboard. This time I would like to spent some more time on the island. How did you get around on Flores? If one wants to make the way from Labuan Bajo to the east, would it be fine to get a motorbike and do the trip step by step with some overnight stays? Thanks a bunch and take car 🙂
