I can’t believe I’ve been living about 2 hours away for a year and am just now visiting! I visited with my boyfriend as part of a 2-day Luberon road trip, exploring quaint villages, natural wonders, and the impressive town of Avignon.

Whether you’re here to dive into centuries of history, stroll through sun-soaked squares, or just live your best Provençal life sipping rosé by the Rhône, Avignon has you covered.

Why go to Avignon? Oh, only because it’s the perfect blend of history, culture, and that irresistible French charm! Best Time to Go

The best time to visit Avignon is from late spring to early fall (May to September) when the weather is warm and the city’s outdoor cafés, parks, and festivals are in full swing.

July is particularly magical thanks to the famous Avignon Festival, a month-long celebration of theater, dance, and art. But if you prefer a quieter vibe, May, June, and September offer beautiful weather without the peak-season crowds.

Getting Around

Avignon is super walkable, especially within the old city’s medieval walls. Most of the must-see spots are just a short stroll away from each other!

For exploring beyond the city center, buses are reliable and affordable, and renting a bike is a great option—especially for a scenic ride to Île de la Barthelasse.

Taxis and rideshares are available but rarely necessary unless you’re venturing further out.

Get In

Getting to Avignon is a breeze! If you’re flying in, the nearest major airport is Marseille Provence Airport, about an hour’s drive away. From there, you can hop on a shuttle bus or rent a car.

But the real star? The high-speed TGV train! It zips you from Paris to Avignon in about 2 hours and 40 minutes, dropping you off just a quick bus or taxi ride from the city center.

There’s also regional train service if you’re coming from nearby gems like Marseille or Lyon. Easy peasy!

1. Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes)
