Not far from Des Moines, Nevada is a charming small town surrounded by hiking, skiing, and cycling opportunities. A list of cheap weekend getaways in Southern Ohio wouldn’t be complete without including Hocking Hills State Park. There are no entrance fees, you can camp there for as low as $25, pack your own food, and enjoy the freedom of the outdoors.

There are seven major hiking areas in Hocking Hills State Park: Ash Cave, Old Man’s Cave, Rock House, Conkle’s Hollow, Cedar Falls, Cantwell Cliffs, and Whispering Cave Trail. All are breathtaking and worth the hike. Most hikes are short and easy and can be done by the whole family.

At the campgrounds, you’ll find all the basic amenities such as showers, toilets, water, fire rings with cooking grates… You can either bring your RV and find a full-hookup space or bring your tent and pick a spot at the park’s primitive campground (closed in winter).

Prairie House Manor Bed and Breakfast, De Smet, SD

Within an hour’s drive, you can visit the Prairie Village Historic Museum and Lake Herman State Park in Madison, as well as the charming town of Brookings, offering many fun things to do for families and couples. In Huron, you’ll find the Dakotaland Museum and a fun waterpark if you’re visiting with kids.

Rib Waters Inn, Rib Lake, WI

The River Hills Motel, Algoma, WI

You can drive to Sturgeon Bay to visit the Door County Historical Museum and the Door County Maritime Museum, stopping by the Sturgeon Bay Canal Light on your way back. In the opposite direction, Wequiock Falls are a popular attraction that don’t require much walking from the parking lot, there’s a grill and a picnic area there.
