When you’re ready to head out, go for a hike at the beautiful Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, spanning over 47,000 acres of marshes, forests, and coastal habitats. Another option is to head to Double Trouble State Park where you’ll find miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as canoeing and kayaking opportunities, or to the Brendan T. Byrne State Forest.

If the weather is nice you can spend a day at the beach. Waretown is located near several beautiful beaches, including Long Beach Island, Seaside Heights, and Island Beach State Park.

Cape May is a charming seaside town, known for its beautiful beaches, Victorian architecture, and rich history. While it may quite an expensive place to visit during the summer months, you’ll find affordable hotel rates the rest of the year. Even in winter, you can enjoy strolling the beaches and seeing the historic houses, warming up at a museum or coffee shop.

The Colton Court Motor Inn is a great affordable place to stay at. You’ll be right across the beach and within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and entertainment options. The rooms are basic and clean, some are big enough for families, and each comes with a private bathroom, TV, and a kitchenette (with a stovetop in some rooms). There’s on-site parking as well.

The Cape May Lighthouse is a must-see, climb the 199 steps to the top of the lighthouse for stunning views of the ocean and surrounding area. Then explore some of the beaches such as Higbee Beach, Poverty Beach, and Sunset Beach, if the weather is nice you can plan a picnic there.

Cape May is a popular destination for birders, especially during the spring and fall migrations so be sure to bring your binoculars.

In town, go on a trolley tour to learn about the history and architecture of Cape May before checking out the local shops and art galleries, selling everything from handmade crafts to fine art. Stop by Out There Coffee for lunch, a cup of coffee, or pastries.

You can also tour the Emlen Physick Estate and the vineyards at Cape May Winery before sampling some of their local wines.

Cheesequake State Park Campground, Old Bridge

Cheesequake State Park is a popular outdoor recreation destination offering plenty of things to do over a weekend. The park features a unique combination of hardwood forests, swamps, and marshes, and is named after the Cheesequake Creek, which flows through the park.

Camping there is one of the best ways to spend a weekend on a budget. There’s a $10 per vehicle fee, no entrance fee, camping is $20 a night, and all the activities there are free. The campground is open from April 1st through October 31st.

The campsites are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings and have easy access to bathroom and shower facilities.

The park has several hiking trails, ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. The trails take you through a variety of ecosystems and offer scenic views of the park as well as wildlife viewing opportunities. There’s also a mountain biking trail.

You can go on a kayak eco-tours led by a park naturalist for $15 per person – reservations are required. You can also go kayaking on your own to explore the park from the water or launch a boat (electric motor only).

On Hooks Creek Lake, you’ll find a designated swimming area open during the summer months with lifeguards on duty.
