Make sure to pick up gas at Alpine, TX, the last gas station before the three-and-a-half-hour drive. Plan at least two days to hit the highlights of Big Bend National Park.

The three distinct areas in Big Bend National Park are Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, Chisos Basin, and Rio Grand Village.

Drive the entirety of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, pausing for short hikes and iconic overlooks before ending at the famous Santa Elena Canyon.

If you are there on the first Saturday of a month from March to December, you should stop by the Wimberley Market Days, Texas Hill Country’s largest outdoor market and the second-largest flea market in the state. They also organize tons of free events and several food trucks and stands set up shop there for the day.

The town is also known for its lavender fields. If you are visiting around June, head to Rough Creek and wander through the fields.

The prime time to see bluebonnets in full bloom is around the third week of April, but Ennis is worth visiting year-round. You can drive along the 40 miles of Bluebonnet Trails to witness this beautiful phenomenon.

For water activities and maybe a romantic picnic, head to Bardwell Lake where you can relax for a few hours and enjoy the scenery.

In town, explore the historic downtown and check out local highlights like the Ennis Railroad and Cultural Heritage Museum, the National Polka Festival Hall of Fame and Museum, and the Ennis Public Theatre.

The Quality Inn Ennis is a good place to stay for couples on a budget. Breakfast and parking are available for free, and the hotel has an outdoor pool.

Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site

Located in West Texas, near El Paso, Hueco Tanks State Park is known for its stunning scenery, wildlife, and pictographs/petroglyphs. There, you can hike, bike, rock climb, bird watch, and stargaze. It’s ideal for couples looking for an inexpensive romantic getaway in Texas.

You can camp there for as low as $12 in one of the park’s 20 campgrounds. Otherwise, you’ll find plenty of cheap hotels and vacation rentals in El Paso.

Some areas of the park can only be visited on a tour while others can be explored independently. In any case, you’ll need to book your spot in advance.

If you have more time, you can visit the charming town of El Paso, or plan a road trip along the El Paso Uplands Loop for chances to spot wildlife.

Garner State Park

West of Austin, is the beautiful Garner State Park. It’s a cheap weekend getaway destination popular among locals, it’s ideal for couples on a budget who like to spend time outdoors.

Plan to camp there ($15 to $26 a night) or book a vacation rental in one of the nearby towns. The park also has a couple of lodges starting at $130 a night.

There, you can spend your time swimming and tubing on the Frio river, relaxing at the beach, and hiking through the park’s 16 miles of scenic trails. You can also rent a paddle boat, kayak, or canoe to explore the river further.

The park is famous for its summer jukebox dances held every day during the warmer months.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Outdoorsy couples who are looking to spend time outside will love spending a few days in Palo Duro Canyon. Located in the Texas Panhandle, the state park is known for its many nature trails and gorgeous scenery.

Home to the second largest canyon in the United States, the park features 30 miles of hiking and biking trails as well as several campsites, some with water and electricity, and others in wild camping areas.

Stop at the visitor center to pick up a map and learn more about the park. Check what’s happening first as many trails can be closed due to weather.

During summer, you can watch the TEXAS Outdoor Musical, retracing the story of early settlers, at the Pioneer Amphitheater.

If you have time left, you can visit the nearby town of Amarillo, look for wildlife at Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge, or take a dip at the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.

You can camp within the park for as little as $16 per night or book a cabin (prices start at $60). You’ll find plenty of inexpensive and comfortable vacation rentals in the nearby town of Canyon or in Amarillo.
