New York City, New York

NYC during Christmas

By Sam Opp of Find Love and Travel

Without a doubt, New York City is not only one of the most romantic places along the Northeast Coast but maybe even in the entire US.

The Big Apple is home to luxury romantic dinners with cascading city views, sunset walks, and iconic landmarks. One thing for sure is you’ll never be short of ways to spend quality time with your partner while here.

Some of the top romance-filled activities include packing a picnic and heading to Central Park, having a luxurious meal in The Edge, and taking the ferry to Staten Island to see the Statue of Liberty up close.

Travelers that visit NYC during Christmas time could also experience an evening rich in romance by checking out the twinkling Christmas lights at Dyker Heights and sharing a kiss under the Rockefeller Christmas Tree.

New York is an all-year-round destination, but the Spring is a great time to visit for blooming flowers and warm weather. Alternatively, the fall offers vibrant fall foliage and fewer crowds. Summer and Christmas time are the most crowded seasons.

A great hotel to stay in is the Hyatt House Hotel in Chelsea. They offer a delicious complimentary breakfast, and it is located close by to popular attractions. So, no need to waste your time together on the subway!

Camden, Maine

Camden, Maine

By Lori of TravelinMad

Looking for a romantic place just for the two of you? Camden in Midcoast Maine has to be one of the most romantic places in the United States. This three-season destination on the coast of Maine has all the charm of Acadia and Bar Harbor without the crowds.

That’s not to say this quaint small town isn’t a popular destination, but this is the smaller, more refined getaway for couples to escape for a weekend or longer and there are plenty of romantic things to do in Camden

While spring and summer offer ideal weather, fall in Midcoast is especially beautiful with foliage that glows against the dramatic landscape.

Camden is a harbor town and life revolves around the water. The charming Main Street skirts the harbor and has a tantalizing array of shops to browse and eateries to laze the afternoon away in with a coffee drink or glass of wine.

For a unique and special experience, take a sunset sail on a wooden schooner out of Camden Harbor and celebrate the day with a champagne toast and stunning sunset as you sail past lighthouses and the rocky coastline.

There are lots of great restaurant choices in Camden, but you won’t want to miss the blueberry pancakes at The Marriner Restaurant. For excellent Thai cuisine, Long Grain is a favorite place.

As for where to stay, the Hartstone Inn is as romantic as it gets for couples, and their Hideaway Spa offers intense relaxing spa treatments and experiences.

Beacon has so many dining options. Part of the fun is exploring the funky downtown area and seeing what calls to you. The Himalayan restaurant Momo Valley has some excellent food including momo dumplings. You will also find plenty of options at the Palestinian concept Ziatün.

Or stay at the boutique Hotel Kinsley in Kingston which has an incredible farm-to-table restaurant.

Either location puts you near some of the most romantic activities for couplesMirbeau Inn & Spa in Rhinebeck has couples-friendly spa packages that include a spa treatment, a healthy meal, and use of amenities like a hot tub and sauna.

Or you can keep it low-key with a movie night at the independent cinema Upstate Films, also in Rhinebeck. Cap off the night with a visit to the Kingston location of Westkill Brewing, a local favorite brewery.

There are so many incredible walks and hikes near Kingston New York that you simply must get outside during your visit. A summer weekend is perfect for a garden stroll at Innisfree, a Chinese-inspired cup garden across the river from Kingston. Pack a picnic and enjoy the atmosphere.

Berkshires, Massachusetts

CFbridge Berkshire in winter

By Karen of Outdoor Adventure Sampler

The Berkshires of western Massachusetts is an ideal spot for a romantic retreat. The natural landscapes, cultural attractions, and picturesque villages make it a fabulous destination in any season.

In the summer, have a picnic on the lawn of Tanglewood, a live music venue in the Berkshires, while enjoying a concert. In addition, the Berkshire Botanical Garden is a perfect place to stroll and bond while enjoying the beautiful grounds.

In the fall, the colorful foliage is perfect to enjoy together. Hike up Monument Mountain in Great Barrington for stellar views of the whole Housatonic River Valley. A candlelight dinner in one of the foodie-famous restaurants in the Berkshires such as the Old Mill is a great ending for your day.

Arts lovers will enjoy a time together at one of the best museums in the Berkshires. The Norman Rockwell Museum and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts are popular.

For couples who favor a romantic snowy landscape, the Berkshires is perfect in the winter. Hunker down in front of the fireplace in a historic inn. More active explorers will appreciate the cross-country ski centers and downhill resorts tucked in the Berkshire hills.

Salem, MA

By Ella of Many More Maps

For a romantic getaway in the northeast, there’s no better place to explore than the enchanting cobblestone streets of Salem, MA.

Sure, you may have heard of Salem thanks to the famous witch trials that took place here, but the magic of Salem actually lies in its historic streets and buildings and natural beauty thanks to its waterfront location.

You’ll find Salem’s heartbeat in its historic downtown. Here, you should take a hand-in-hand stroll down Derby Street to explore its charming independent shops and cafes set in historic buildings.

Then, head on over to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. You’ll get breathtaking views over the ocean, and get to check out Salem’s very own old-timey ship – the Friendship of Salem.

Cape May, New Jersey

Beach in Cape May, NJ

By Marla of Marla Cimini

Cape May, New Jersey, is located at the southernmost tip of the state, and with its historic architecture, quaint ambiance, and stunning beaches, it’s considered one of the most romantic destinations in New Jersey. It’s an idyllic place for couples to vacation and it’s no surprise that Cape May is an especially popular destination for weddings (and engagements!) during the warmer months.

Cape May is a lovely beach town and a great place to visit, offering a picturesque coastline with soft golden sand and rolling waves. Just about everything is walkable in town, including the beaches, cafes, and many independently-owned boutiques – so once you park your car, you won’t need it again during your trip!

Cape May’s romantic activities for couples are many. They include simply relaxing on the (uncrowded) beaches and walking along the shoreline, strolling on the quiet boardwalk that always seems to have an ocean breeze, taking a surf lesson for two, and gazing at the sunset (at the aptly-named Sunset beach).

While you’re in town, don’t miss touring the famous Cape May lighthouse and visiting the world-class Cape May bird observatory.

For a romantic date night, book a table at the high-end Washington Inn.

It’s especially romantic to take a cruise on the Cape May ferry to Rehoboth Beach, DE for a day of sightseeing (be sure to purchase tickets in advance).

There are numerous historic inns and B&Bs in Cape May, so there are many romantic places to choose from when visiting this shore town.

One of the most romantic places to stay in Cape May is the legendary hotel, Congress Hall. Built in 1816, Congress Hall is considered “America’s first seaside resort,” and it features a spa, an expansive pool area, and several cafes and restaurants (including the famous Blue Pig). This stately hotel is also home to a popular bar featuring handcrafted cocktails and an adjacent shaded outdoor terrace.

Visitors always feel like they’ve taken a step back in time at this beautiful hotel with tasteful and luxurious décor. (And you may see a few weddings taking place here, as it’s a prime locale for beachside nuptials). Some rooms at Congress Hall have private balconies with ocean and pool views, so it’s always best to request one of those when booking your stay.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

portsmouth new hampshire

By Stella Jane of Around the World in 24 Hours

Portsmouth, New Hampshire is one of the most romantic destinations in the Northeast because of its incomparable charm. It was one of the most important port cities in America during colonial times, and many of those adorable historic homes have been preserved.

If you and your loved one fall for anything old-fashioned, you’ll adore exploring the colonial homes and gardens, especially the ones located at the Strawbery Banke Museum. You can also indulge in the beautiful gardens at the historic Moffatt-Ladd House or in stunning Prescott Park.

If you’re a couple who likes to get active, you can take one of the top-rated bike tours and explore Portsmouth’s beauty that way. Or if that’s a little too active for you, head out on the water! There’s nothing more romantic than a sunset cruise on the Piscataqua River

Some couples love antiquing, and Downtown Portsmouth NH is the perfect place to go hunting for that perfect treasure for your home. This area has many wonderful antique stores with goodies at every price point.

Portsmouth also has tons of charming and romantic places to eat. I recommend the excellent vegetarian restaurant Green Elephant, which serves delicious curries.

One of the best places in Portsmouth for a couple to stay is the Hotel Portsmouth. This hotel is in a beautiful Victorian manor house, and it is just a short walk from the waterfront, which is the perfect place to go for a romantic stroll.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

By Vicky of Buddy The Traveling Monkey

One of the most romantic destinations in the Northeast is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Known as the “Steel City,” Pittsburgh has a lot to offer. Couples can enjoy time outdoors, visit world-class museums, and discover great eateries.

One attraction to visit is the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. It has been wowing visitors since 1893 and has 15 acres including a 14-room glasshouse and 23 distinct gardens. It’s considered one of the best botanical gardens on the east coast and it’s the perfect place for a romantic stroll.

If you and your special someone want to experience Pittsburgh from a different angle, head over to the Duquesne Incline. It’s part of the Pittsburgh transportation system and technically isn’t considered an “attraction” but it’s one of the top things to do in Pittsburgh. You can ride up and down on the wooden cable car that has been around since 1877 and see spectacular views of Pittsburgh. Talk about romance!

If you and your partner want to experience some culture, visit the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History. Both museums are in the same building and one ticket covers admission to both. Tip – If you visit during the week, admission prices are half off after 3 p.m.

To eat, make your way to Federal Gallery, a food hall with multiple restaurants and a bar with a great selection of both local and national beers and unique cocktails.

For your stay, consider the Drury Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh Downtown. It’s within walking distance of many top attractions, has a restaurant, and has an outdoor swimming pool.

Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Fall foliage view, Bowmans Hill Tower

By Lance & Laura of Guide to Philly

For nearly 80 years, Bucks County in Pennsylvania has been a popular romantic getaway in the Northeast. Among the rolling hills and dense forests, visitors will find places to get away and reconnect.

The area is popular with those looking to experience the good life.

There are nearly a dozen wineries to visit (many of which are also popular destination wedding venues). Every time some publication puts out the list of best restaurants in America, the county is always overrepresented and there are usually several places on the list.

There are dozens of incredible farm-to-table restaurants, including the Golden Pheasant and The Restaurant at Barley Sheaf Farm (both are veg-friendly). And Sprig & Vine, a true vegan restaurant, has been nationally recognized for excellence.

No visit to Bucks County would be complete without a visit to the Bucks County Playhouse, one of the iconic attractions in New Hope, PA. They have been putting on performances here since 1939.

Historically, many shows destined for Broadway have their premieres here to work out the kinks. The playhouse has played host to everyone from Robert Redford to Jessica Tandy and everyone in between. It continues to draw big-name stars to the stage…without hype and fanfare. Come check out a play or musical here, before tickets become impossibly expensive on Broadway.

Take a day and explore the great outdoors, whether it is kayaking on the Delaware River or hiking through the wildflower center.

Or, you can connect with history. The town of Washington Crossing is where General George Washington made his famous journey across the Delaware River. In the village of Doylestown, don’t miss exploring the Michener Art Museum or the Fonthill Castle (yes, a real castle).

The area is littered with many small bed & breakfast inns. These B&Bs are a large part of what makes the area unique. For refined romantic luxury, head to The River House at Odette’s, Travel + Leisure’s “most romantic hotel” in the Mid-Atlantic. Pro tip: opt for a suite with a river view since they have fireplaces and offer incredible views.

Narragansett, Rhode Island

Narragansett, Rhode Island

By Kalyn of All American Atlas

If long walks on the beach and cute dates at the mini golf sound like your idea of a romantic time, then Narragansett, Rhode Island should be at the top of your list for a getaway with your loved one.

For the outdoorsy types, Narragansett Town Beach offers a clean and sandy beach experience with great waves for trying your hand at surfing or watching other visitors hang ten.

For an evening stroll around sunset, check out Scarborough State Beach and bring a picnic for dinner as the sun goes down – it’s one of the best things to do in Narragansett!

Black Point Trailhead is a great hiking location with picturesque seaside views if enjoy active date ideas, or you can go the opposite and sit down and eat ice cream at Brickley’s Homemade Ice Cream together.

For the best weather and chance of all of your must-dos being open, plan to visit Narragansett in the summer months, but if you don’t mind a bit of chill, enjoy Rhode Island in the Spring and enjoy the colors of autumn in New England as you make your way there.

Couples should stay at The Break Hotel, a boutique hotel that has breathtaking views from the rooftop lounge, as well as a spa so you can treat yourself to some pampering!

Portland, Maine

Portland, ME

By Iphi from Travel Choreography

Located on the Southern Maine Coast, Portland is the embodiment of Northeastern seaside charm. Perfectly accessible from Boston, Portland is the perfect romantic destination. While being quintessentially Maine, it still has the feel of a big city.

Whether you’re there for 1 day or a long weekend, the port city – with its exciting food scene and postcard-worthy views – has a je ne sais quoi that makes it worth the trip.

Wandering through the cobblestone streets of the Old Port district is just about the most romantic thing you can do in Portland. The area is home to numerous boutiques and restaurants housed in old-style red-brick buildings.

Spend the evening strolling on the beautiful waterfront with its gorgeous views of the faraway islands of Casco Bay. And don’t forget to sample the large selection of food offered, aside from the famous Maine lobster. The Green Elephant, one of the many local eateries that is vegan-friendly, is a great place to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day.

If you’re looking for a place to stay, look no further than the Canopy by Hilton. This elegant hotel has a fantastic location, perfect for lazily watching the harbor get slowly busy in the morning right from the comfort of your bed.

Niagara Falls, New York

Niagara Falls, NY

By Kristin of Tiny Footsteps Travel

For a romantic couple’s getaway in the Northeast, consider Niagara Falls. While the Canadian side of the falls is known for its casinos and family-friendly activities, the U.S. side is less built up. This makes it less crowded, and more focused on spending time on the natural beauty aspect of Niagara Falls, which makes for a lot of intimate ways to spend time together as a couple.

Whether or not you decide to venture over the border to the Canadian side, there are several gems to be enjoyed together on the U.S. side. For a relaxing outing, go for a hike on the Niagara Gorge, which has a well-maintained walk along the Niagara River. Its lush vegetation thrives from the mist of the falls, which makes it a perfect place to get outdoors and enjoy nature.

If you want to get up and personal with the falls, hop on the Maid of the Mist boat which will take you to the base of the falls. Just prepare – you will get wet, but you’ll be provided with a poncho to either return afterwards, or keep as a souvenir. Feeling the force of the falls is an experience that you’ll remember.

A fun thing to do for history-buff couples is to visit the Niagara Falls Underground Heritage Centre which just opened in 2018 and features important aspects of America’s history. Here you can learn about first-hand accounts of slaves who fled to Canada for their freedom, as Niagara Falls was the light at the end of the tunnel. You can also see the remnants of the suspension bridge they used to get across the border.

If you’re an adventure-seeking couple, check out the Whirlpool Jet Boat, which is just a 15-minute drive from the falls. There’s both a stay-dry version and a get-soaked version. Regardless of which you choose, this 15000 horsepower boat gives you a thrilling way to experience the strength and fury of the fast-moving river.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Covered Bridge in Gettysburg

By Jessica of Past Lane Travels

Gettysburg, PA is a town steeped in history, made famous by the pivotal role it played in the Battle of Gettysburg. But a trip to Gettysburg doesn’t have to be all about history. This small town features brick sidewalks, hanging flower baskets on every light pole, and a variety of pubs and wineries, providing the perfect backdrop for romantic adventures.

One of the most iconic and romantic landmarks in Gettysburg is the Sachs Covered Bridge. Used by both armies during the Battle of Gettysburg, it is also considered one of the most haunted places in Gettysburg.

Don’t worry because the bridge appears anything but scary. Surrounded by trees and rolling farmland it offers picturesque and serene surroundings.

Pro Tip: Take a short walk down the trail by the bridge and you can find a secret spot by the serene waters of Marsh Creek for a romantic picnic lunch.

When you’re done exploring, you can spend a perfect romantic night at the historic Brafferton Inn in downtown Gettysburg. Construction of this native brown stone house began in 1796 and was expanded upon in 1815. It is the oldest deeded house in downtown Gettysburg and abounds with history and charm.

Best of all, at the Brafferton Inn you can choose from 18 rooms (including 9 suites), that are decorated from Colonial to Victorian. Some even have jacuzzi tubs and fireplaces.

This historic inn also has a beautiful garden area and outdoor deck even though it is less than a block from Lincoln Square. A wide variety of pubs, restaurants, museums, and coffee shops are located within walking distance.
